Water Heater – Plumbing Repair

Most water heaters here in Minnesota are of the “tank” style, heated with natural gas and atmospherically vented up a chimney.   That’s changing to an extent.  Most new homes today are built with a power vent or direct vent style where the water heater flue gas is vented, usually, outside the side of the home in PVC.  This is similar to high efficiency furnaces.  The reason for this is because of new and stricter building codes related to chimneys, combustion air and ventilation.

Also gaining popularity here in Minnesota are tankless water heaters. Tankless water heaters typically run on natural gas but also need an outlet for some of the electrical controls. Efficiencies can be as high 98% which is amazing as opposed to 60% or so (there’s actually quite a range) for a atmospherically vented natural gas water heater. An oversimplied way to understand the efficiency of a furnace or water heater is to imagine that out of each $1.00 in natural gas that is purchased and run through the appliance, if it is 98% efficient, 98 cents stays in the home.  The rest is waste. Tankless Water Heaters do cost more on the front end than conventional water heaters but save more money on the back end as each year goes by.  Tankless water heater warranties on some of the heat exchangers can be up to 20 years which is usually better than parts warranties on other water heater products.  Like the power vents, tankless water heaters are many times vented out the side of the home in PVC.

Electric water heaters are still common for homes without a chimney or without natural gas.  In an electric water heater, there are two elements located at the bottom of the tank that regulates and monitors the water-heating process as opposed to a flame.

One feature available now on tank or power vent styles is called high recovery.  They typically have a higher BTU input so that the water heater recovers more quickly.
